  • Cornish College of the Arts celebrates the music of composer and retiring faculty member Jarrad Powell. The concert will look back over his 35 years as professor at Cornish and Director of Gamelan Pacifica. The music will pay homage to the great poet W.S. Merwin and Zen Master Dōgen and will feature Gamelan Pacifica, with the remarkable vocalist Jessika Kenney and Seattle’s leading erhu player and Music Director of the Seattle Chinese Orchestra, Warren Chang.

GAMELAN PACIFICA presents the third in a series of ongoing collaborations with two remarkable Javanese artists, Ki Midiyanto and Heni Savitri. Ki Midiyanto is a leading figure in Javanese music and has collaborated with Gamelan Pacifica on previous occasions, including music performances and performances of Javanese wayang kulit (shadow puppet theater). Heni Savitri is an outstanding psindhen (solo female vocalist) who will be making her third appearance with Gamelan Pacifica. This concert will showcase two renowned Javanese compositions, Gendhing Kagok Laras and Gendhing Renyep, as well as other compositions featuring psindhen and gerong (male chorus). details

GAMELAN PACIFICA is joined for this concert by DARSONO, one of the most prominent musicians in Central Java today. Darsono will be making his first appearance in Seattle. Also joining Gamelan Pacifica for the concert will be Heri Purwanto, who has collaborated with Gamelan Pacifica several times in the past, as well as the renowned singer Jessika Kenney (Stranger Genius Award recipient and James W. Ray Distinguished Artist award winner). The concert will feature Gendhing Candranata, Ketawang Gendhing Kabor and other pieces from the Central Javanese repertoire, as well as a collaborative work by Darsono and Kenney. // details

SUHIRDJAN: REVERBERATIONS. The outstanding musicians of GAMELAN PACIFICA pay tribute to the great Javanese gamelan builder Suhirdjan. His recent death was mourned by members of Gamelan Pacifica. Many of the instruments used by the ensemble were built by Suhirdjan back in the mid 1980's. Over the years these instruments have added greatly to our lives and to the musical life of Seattle. The concert will feature the composition Gendhing Jangkung Kuning Mataram, a piece from the Central Javanese city of Yogakarta where Suhirdjan made his home. Also on the concert will be some important contemporary gamelan compositions dating from the 1980's when the Suhirdjan instruments first arrived in Seattle. // details

Through the prisms of Classical Javanese and Persian literature, language, mantra, and mode, the concert atmospherically follows Shams' shattering of the orthodox from within as he wins the heart of Rumi. // details

This performance in celebration of the John Cage centenary pays homage to Cage’s liberating influence and, in particular, to Cage’s scores that are not pieces in the usual sense of the word, but rather scores that are open invitations to create anew, while providing the thoughtful means for doing that. Jessika Kenney presents FONTANA RADIF, a realization of the Persian Radif based on Cage's Fontana Mix (1958); Jarrad Powell, Beth Graczyk, and Robert Campbell collaborate on a performance of Cage's STEPS: A Composition for a Painting, to be performed by individuals or groups (1989). Gamelan Gadhon is an ensemble consisting of the soft-style instruments of the Central Javanese gamelan.
